Scope and Content Notice on door of steel-built explosive store, Carbrook Clay Mine, Falkirk The fireclay industry was of national importance for Scotland during the late 19th century and first half of the 20th century. Fireclay was used as the main material in the manufacture of toilet furniture and sewer pipes. In 1951 Scotland produced almost 60% (by value) of all British unprocessed fireclay. The Carbrook Clay Mine lies to the north-west of Falkirk and was opened c.1953 and closed c.1982. This shows the notice that was on the door of the steel-built explosive store, built in 1975, to replace the original brick-built store. The notice warned unauthorised people to keep away from the building and outlined the penalties liable if they did not. Explosives that were used in the mine were kept safely locked up in this building. A miner nicknamed 'shot firer' would drill holes in the clay face of the mine. He would then put a stick of dynamite with a fuse attached into each hole. Once exploded, the clay rubble would be loaded onto wagons by a miner and transported to the surface.
