Scope and Content Swanston Village, Edinburgh, after restoration The tiny village of Swanston lies close to the southern boundary of Edinburgh at the foot of the Pentland Hills, surrounded by small wooded areas and open farmland. It is one of Edinburgh's most picturesque villages, and is now a conservation area. In the heart of the village is a group of 18th-century whitewashed thatched-roofed cottages, restored in 1962, built facing each other across the village 'green'. Adjoining the group is the two-storeyed White House, the former schoolhouse. Swanston exudes all the old-world charm of a quiet country village, despite having none of the traditional essentials of village life: there is no church; there has been no school for nearly 70 years; and there is no shop, pub or village street.
