Scope and Content Drawing room, first floor, Balnagown Castle, near Milton of Kildary, Highland Balnagown Castle was built before 1490 as a tower-house. Extensions in 1593 and 1668-72 created an L-plan layout. Then, in 1763, Admiral Ross had a block built in the angle, so giving the castle its present rectangular ground-plan. This is the view from the drawing room through to the library. From the 18th century onwards, it was customary for society ladies to withdraw to a drawing room after a meal, leaving the gentlemen at the table to drink, smoke and talk.
