Scope and Content 'Wallace Chair', entrance hall, ground floor, Balnagown Castle, near Milton of Kildary, Highland Balnagown Castle was built before 1490 as a tower-house. Extensions in 1593 and 1668-72 created an L-plan layout. Then, in 1763, Admiral Ross had a block built in the angle, so giving the castle its present rectangular ground-plan. In the entrance hall, a fanciful 19th-century portrait of Scots patriot, Sir William Wallace (executed 1305), hangs over an ancient chair (left) said to have been his property.
