Scope and Content Drawn for publication as comparative plan. Unattributed, [1996]. Plan of burnt mound at Jennet's Knowe, Dumfries and Galloway A group of three crescent-shaped burnt mounds lie on poorly-drained ground, some 550m north-east of Roundstonefoot steading. Like other burnt mounds, this one at Jennet's Knowe is composed of reddish fire-cracked stones, small pieces of charcoal and loose black earth. The mound stands to a height of about 1m. Burnt mounds are generally considered to be Bronze Age cooking places, usually found near streams or springs. Stones were heated in hearths and used to boil water by plunging them into water-filled troughs or pits. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
