NT10NW 22.01 NT 1423 0905 Burnt Mound

NT10NW 22.02 NT 1423 0903 Burnt Mound

NT10NW 22.03 NT 1423 0904 Burnt Mound

This group of three burnt mounds (NT10NW 22.01, 22.02 and 22.03) is situated in poorly-drained ground to the E of the A708 public road some 550m NNE of Roundstonefoot steading (NT10NW 58). The nature of each mound was tested by the removal of turf, revealing in each case at a depth of about 0.1m, a dense concentration of bright red angular fragments of stone and small pieces of charcoal within a matrix of loose black soil. This composition was quite unlike that of the natural subsoil (a grey boulder clay) which was exposed in a nearby stream section.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS), 6 June 1991.

Listed as burnt mounds.

RCAHMS 1997.
