Publication drawing; Plan of Stidriggs settlement.

SC 381975

Description Publication drawing; Plan of Stidriggs settlement.

Date 1996

Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number SC 381975

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of DC 32582

Scope and Content Redrawn from DC 32359 for publication as comparative plan. Plan of a settlement near Stidriggs steading, Dumfries and Galloway Aerial survey first recorded this site in 1986. It lies some 800m south of Stidriggs steading on a terrace above Willie Wilkin's Craig. The settlement's enclosing bank has been badly damaged in places by stone-robbing. Indicated by the hachures, the interior has been levelled into the slope. Evidence for prehistoric occupation comprises the hut-circle on the north and two hut-platforms. Footings of two rectangular buildings are probably post-medieval. Settlements like this enclosed timber-built round-houses with a yard for keeping animals and storage. A mixture of animal husbandry and arable cultivation were likely practised by the inhabitants. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
