Scope and Content Trussed beam of loft-floor over machine-hall inside engineering works at Carron Ironworks, Falkirk Carron Iron Works was founded in 1759 and built on a vast scale to a carefully thought-out plan. It was connected with James Watt's early experiments with steam-power, but was best known for its cannon, the 'Carronade', and its fine castings. This shows the end of the underside of the loft floor. The vertical pendant-post supports the suspended floor directly over the machine-hall. The iron tension-rods run between the wall, stopping them from bursting under the weight and impact of machinery. Many large engineering workshops or foundries were built during the 19th-century heavy engineering expansion. They were strongly built, and usually consisted of a vast machine-hall or erecting-shop with a multi-storeyed wing of workshops. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
