Scope and Content Roof structure over machine-hall inside engineering-shop of Carron Ironworks, Falkirk Carron Iron Works was founded in 1759 and built on a vast scale to a carefully thought-out plan. It was connected with James Watt's early experiments with steam-power, but was best known for its cannon, the 'Carronade', and its fine castings. This shows the roof structure in the loft over the machine-hall. The vertical, or 'king' posts are extended beneath the loft floor to support the suspended floor directly over the machine-hall. Many large engineering workshops or foundries were built during the 19th-century heavy engineering expansion. They were strongly built, and usually consisted of a vast machine-hall or erecting-shop with a multi-storeyed wing of workshops. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
