Scope and Content Reconstructed plan (1854) of Laphroaig Distillery, Isle of Islay The Laphroaig Distillery started in the mid 19th century as part of a farm. It is a good example of the kind of distillery which emerged after changes in the law in 1816 and 1823, and developed slowly to become a large commercial complex. The plant began as part of a farm. By 1854, a larger distillery building (3) had been built, as well as a dwelling house (5) and two byres (4). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
