Scope and Content Reconstruction of Laphroaig Distillery (around 1900), Isle of Islay The Laphroaig Distillery started in the mid 19th century as part of a farm. It is a good example of the kind of distillery which emerged after changes in the law in 1816 and 1823, and developed slowly to become a large commercial complex. By 1900, the distillery had expanded three times. By this time it included a granary (6) malt barn with a kiln (8), an enlarged distillery (12) and malt barn (11), a replacement tun room (13), and new warehouses (14). To make whisky, barley is allowed to germinate into green malt. This is dried, milled, and mixed with hot water to make wort which is extracted and fermented with yeast. The results are distilled to produce raw whisky which is then matured in casks. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
