Scope and Content Plans and drawings showing development of Laphroaig Distillery, Isle of Islay The Laphroaig Distillery started in the mid 19th century as part of a farm. It is a good example of the kind of distillery which emerged after changes in the law in 1816 and 1823, and developed slowly to become a large commercial complex. The plant began as part of a farm but by1886 there were buildings for each part of the process:a granary: malt barns; a kiln; a tun room and a distillery. By 1900, the distillery had expanded three times. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
