Scope and Content Map detail of Greenlaw Tolbooth Steeple, Scottish Borders Patrick Hume, later 1st Earl of Marchmont, built Greenlaw Tolbooth after persuading Parliament to restore Greenlaw's status as head town of Berwickshire. Only the 17th century church tower used as its steeple remains of the tolbooth. The tolbooth consisted of a court-house on the steeple's west side which then doubled as a burgh prison and clock-tower until 1824 and was demolished in 1830. The first-floor interior of the steeple was damaged by a World War II land-mine. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
