A map of Greenlaw dating from 1771 shows a tron to the west of the cross and a well to the east. The tron was an old form of weighing machine, used for heavy items. The public well was reportedly covered with an arch, although no trace of this structure, or the well itself, now remains.
The old map also shows a pillory by the market cross. Subjected to public ridicule and assault, criminals would have been punished here with their head and hands thrust through holes in a wooden frame.

Also situated on the green or market place of Greenlaw were the tron, an ancient weighing machine to the W, and the public well which was arched and to the E of the cross. There was also a pillory at the foot of the cross. Two fairs were held here annually, one on the 3rd May (later changed to the 22nd) and the other on the last Thursday of October.
