Scope and Content Whaling Station, Bunaveneadar, Harris, Western Isles, from north-north-east This is all that remains of a once large whaling station. To the left is the boiler house chimney. To the left of the chimney was the milling area. The concrete structures to the right were the bases for whale oil tanks, whale oil being the main product. The boiler house would have been situated in the foreground. This whaling station was established by Carl Herlofson in 1904. Bunaveneader was one of the five whaling stations set up in Scotland once industrial whaling began in 1903. The other four were in Shetland. All the stations closed in 1914, but three, including Bunaveneader, opened again in 1920. Lewis and Harris are both parts of the same island, collectively known as 'the Long Island', which is the most northerly in the Outer Hebrides. Together they are about 95km in length and around 32km at the widest point. Most of Lewis is quite low-lying, whereas Harris is mountainous. Bunaveneadar is situated on the west coast of Harris.
