Scope and Content Stone multi arched bridges are reflected in the calm waters of a wide river. The banks are covered with town buildings with a turreted tower rising above the roof tops on the right. A row of buses are parked on the revetted bank on the right opposite a row of buildings with shops on their ground floors. This area of the river and its banks is known as the Whitesands. The six arched stone bridge was built in the 15th century and is the oldest surviving one of its kind in Scotland. The farther bridge (Buccleuch Street Bridge) was built in 1794 by Thomas Boyd.
