Scope and Content A large neoclassical house stands within a large formal topiary garden. Steps lead up to the columned porch and there is a forest of chimney stacks and a small turret on the roof. Dense woods lie beyond. A walled raised walkway overlooks the garden in the foreground. There is a wooden summer house by the lawn on right and a terrace with stone summer houses connects with the house on the left. The house and gardens were built by the Scottish architect, Sir William Bruce (d.1710), construction starting in 1685. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in Loch Leven Castle nearby.
