Scope and Content A castellated mansion house with a curved facade, bow windows, towers, and a large conservatory to the side, with wooded hills behind. There are climbing plants on the lower section, and balustraded stairs leading to the front entrance. A flag and weather vanes are on the roof. The castle and grounds are now part of the University of Stirling. The estate was sold in the late 18th century by Robert Haldane, the founder of Scottish Congregationalism, to Sir Robert Abercromby, brother of Sir Ralph, hero of Aboukir during the Battle of the Nile (1798) in which Nelson defeated the French Fleet.
