Scope and Content The remains of a castle with walls and corner towers. A path leads through the well-kept grounds to an entrance arch at mid centre of the facing wall. In the background a river is visible. A high grass mound with a flat top on right continues the line of the wall. The towers are built of small rubble stones and the wall of larger stones. Hailes Castle was built in the 13th & 14th centuries; it passed to the Hepburns and Queen Mary was brought here by the Earl of Bothwell on their flight in 1567. It was damaged by Cromwell's troops in 1650. In 1926 it entered into the care of the state.
