Scope and Content A romantic view of a ruined castle on a mound at the end of a promontory; with boats reflected in the water, and mountains in the distance. One of the boats is being rowed across the strait. Kyleakin derives its name from the kyle or strait separating Skye from the mainland, and King Haakon IV who sailed through it on the way to defeat at the Battle of Largs (1263). The castle or keep dates from the 14th century.
