Scope and Content A tall tower house stands on a low promontory overlooking a farm set at the edge of flat fields beside a small stream. Cultivated hills fill the skyline beyond. A church with a tower and spire sits on the promontory at the right. The farm consists of a stone house and a group of stone barns with slate roofs. Several hayricks stand beside the barns. Borthwick Castle was built in 1430 by Sir William Borthwick. It is U-plan and is one of the few castles to survive with its courtyard and outworks complete. The public records of Scotland were stored here during World War II.
