Scope and Content A harled house, with a plain tower at the far corner, stands on a terraced bluff above a shallow river. A suspension footbridge crosses the river in the foreground. The house has mullioned windows and there are outbuildings behind it. The hillside is covered in woods and further houses can be glimpsed amongst the trees. The castle is the seat of the Scotts (now Dukes) of Buccleuch. It was both burnt and almost destroyed in the 16th century and the current building dates from the 1574 rebuilding.
