Scope and Content An imposing neoclassical building with portico and pediment. A horse drawn cart is parked below the tree left of view, and there is a group of people on the steps of the building. Steep hills rise behind the building. Dollar Academy was founded in 1818 with a bequest from James Macnab, who began life as a local herd-boy but made his way to Edinburgh from whence he embarked to London and became a rich ship's captain. The classical front was designed by William Playfair.
