Scope and Content A rendered, extended tower house stands behind a driveway passing through a large area of mown grass, with a standing stone and scattered trees. Moorland hills rise up beyond the buildings. A small formal garden lies at the foot of the tower. The tower house has a classical columned window at the top and a corner tower with iron rails round an open columned bell cupola with a clock face below. A columned porch protects the entrance to the main wing of the house. The castle was built by John Gordon in the 16th century. From 1848 it was leased to the Royal family as a dower house and Edward VII used it when Prince of Wales. It has since returned to Gordon hands and the later adjoining mansion has been demolished.
