The original part of Abergeldie Castle consists of a tall rectangular tower house, about 35ft by 28ft, with walls 4ft thick at its basement, and with a round tower 15ft in diameter at the SW. corner. Its plan and architectural detail point to a mid-16th century date and analogies with the Castle of Balfluig at Alford, which bears the date 1556, suggest that they were designed by the same man. It is said that the castle was moated but no remains of one exist.
There has been a great deal of alteration to the original castle and a long low building was added in the 18th century. Since 1848 it has been leased to the Royal Family.
