Scope and Content Marshy grass land below a substantial inhabited castle sited on a rock promonory surrounded by cliffs. The castle stands above Loch Linnhe and the Firth of Lorn, and was formerly seat of the Macleans. It was burnt by Argyll in 1691 and confiscated after Culloden. The Macleans brought the castle in 1912 and restored it. The castle may have belonged the Somerled's MacDougall descendants, and passed to the Lords of the Isles, then by marriage to the MacLeans in the 14th century.
