Scope and Content Grass slope, with rocky outcrops below a large ruined castle on the clifftop. Castle surviving to roof height with large square keep, towers and roof gable. The castle stands above Loch Linnhe and the Firth of Lorn, and was formerly seat of the Macleans. It was burnt by Argyll in 1691 and confiscated after Culloden. The Macleans brought the castle in 1912 and restored it. The castle was probably begun by Somerled's MacDougall descendants, it then passed to the Lords of the Isles, then by marriage to the MacLeans in the 14th century.
