Scope and Content Eroded lichen-covered memorial stones on a moorland battlefield, with a commemorative cairn to the right of the road; a coniferous wood in background. Site of the Battle of Culloden, 16 April 1746, a decisive battle fought between Prince Charles Edward Stuart and the Duke of Cumberland, which saw the end of Stuart hopes. The Battle of Culloden was the last major battle fought in mainland Britain. The Battle of Culloden also saw the beginning of the end of the traditional way of life for Highlanders, for example, the Act of Proscription (1746) banned the wearing of Highland dress (repealed in 1782).
