Scope and Content View of New Lanark, a settlement which dates from 1785 when it was founded by David Dale (1739-1806) as a cotton-manufacturing centre, harnessing the natural energy from the River Clyde. Dale's son in law, Robert Owen, was committed to social reform and further developed New Lanark. The first cotton mill opened in 1786 and was powered by water taken below the Falls of Clyde.
