Scope and Content The Galloway hydro-electric scheme uses the water of the rivers Doon and Dee to drive five power stations, the lowest of which is at Tongland, near Kirkcudbright. This photograph shows Glenlochar Barrage across the river Dee at the south end of Loch Ken. The barrage is 326ft or 99.4m long and was built to raise the level of the loch slightly so that it could act as a reservoir for Tongland. This part of the scheme was commissioned in 1935. This barrage is now remotely controlled from Tongland Power Station
