Plan of a farmstead at Rain Sike, Dumfries and Galloway The remains of a post-medieval farmstead lie on a steep east-facing slope situated some 650m south of the modern Arresgill steading. Rain Sike probably formed a larger farming unit along with the township site at Arresgill. On plan, this farmstead comprises two rectangular buildings set on platforms terraced into the slope. The southerly building shows traces of stone wall-footings. To the east are the remains of an extensive system of rig cultivation. Prior to the mid-18th century, tenant farmers and their families often dwelt in townships, a loose collection of dwellings, byres and barns surrounded by fields. The better land was used for arable crops, the poorer used for the communal grazing of stock. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
