Scope and Content After the 1745 Jacobite rebellion, the estates of many Jacobites were forfeited to the crown. Achnacarry House, the seat of the Cameron Clan, is located about 9 miles northeast of Fort William. The original castle was built around 1655 and destroyed after the Battle of Culloden in 1746 because Cameron of Lochiel had supported the Jacobites. In 1802, a new house in Scottish Baronial style was built by James Gillespie Graham (1776-1855) close to the remains of the old Achnacarry Castle. It was the HQ for Commando training in the Second World War.
