May 1903'. RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN: Drawings of main entrance to Pittencrieff House, Pittencrieff Park, Dunfermline, Fife Pittencrieff House was built in about 1635 for Sir Alexander Clerk of Pittencrief. It was bought in 1902 by Andrew Carnegie who presented it to the nation in 1903. In 1909-11 Robert S Lorimer converted it to a museum and club. Above the doorway are the Clerk arms and the inscription: PRAISED.BE.GOD.FOR.AL.HIS.GIFTES. The drawing also shows details of the door latch and, for comparison, fittings from Corstorphine House, Edinburgh. Andrew Carnegie (1835-1914) was born in Dunfermline and emigrated to the United States to make his fortune. He returned home as a rich philanthropist, and funded projects for the public good, like parks and museums.
