Catalogue Number F 715

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Written on the back of the mounted print: 'Shire: Fife. Place: Anstruther Wester. Building: Parish Kirk - Panel '. Photographer: 'F.B.' Date: 'July 1963' The Parish Church was probably rebuilt in the 18th century, preserving only the 16th century steeple from an older building. This panel set into the wall declares: ENTER IN AT YE STRAIT GET. IT IS YE VYD GET YAT LEDS TO PERDITION. This should be read: 'Enter in at the narrow gate. It is the wide gate that leads to perdition'. In old inscriptions: depending on its position, the letter 'Y' is sometimes used as a vowel, and sometimes intended to be read th'; the letter 'V' often stands for 'W'; and the spelling is usually very different from modern practice.
