An oblique aerial view of Gilchrist, near Muir of Ord, Black Isle, looking SE.

DP 343164

Description An oblique aerial view of Gilchrist, near Muir of Ord, Black Isle, looking SE.

Date 1/10/2013

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 343164

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content A general view with the promontory fort at Gilchrist in the foreground surrounded on three sides by lower marshy ground occupying former kettle holes. Recent (2018) excavation as part of the Tarradale Through Time project provided much more detailed knowledge of the promontory fort defences. A little to the left of the fort a linear feature and pits within a possible enclosure have been noted on aerial photographs, but not visible in this one. Above the promontory fort the structure on the lower left of the cluster of buildings is Gilchrist's medieval church, restored as a mausoleum in the 19th century, and surrounded by a churchyard and enclosing wall. In the fields above and to the right the church a bronze age copper alloy axe and other features have been found. In the rough area above the church a possible ring ditch has been recorded and above that are the Bellevue Cottages. To their left, in the lower left corner of the second field is an unenclosed settlement and above that around the small patch of rough ground the large Pictish barrow cemetery excavated in 2019 as part of the Tarradale Through Time project. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
