Scope and Content This view shows, in the foreground, the Ness of Chanonry with the towns of Rosemarkie and Fortrose on the right, Inverness is in the distance with Loch Ness in the far distance beyond and the Beauly Firth to the right. The medieval burgh of Rosemarkie (Canmore ID 77212) seen here in the lower right foreground has many ancient buildings. The present Rosemarkie Parish Church (Canmore ID 14392) was built relatively recently in 1821, but it stands on a site whose Christian history probably dates back to a foundation of St. Moluag, who died in 592. Moluag's monastery was taken over, possibly in 716, by St. Boniface or Curitan, as a Culdie community. He dedicated the church to St. Peter, but it also became known as St. Boniface's. The first mention of the Bishop of Rosemarkie is in 1126, but a new cathedral at nearby Fortrose was founded about 1235. Many cross slabs and sculptured stones of Pictish design were found in the vicinity of Rosemarkie church and are now in the town's Groam House Museum collection (Canmore ID 14338). In 1455 the medieval burgh of Fortrose (Canmore ID 77213), right of centre beyond Rosemarkie in the view, was annexed to that of Rosemarkie. Like Rosemarkie, Fortrose has many ancient and interesting buildings, in particular the remains of the Cathedral (Canmore ID 14324) and also its harbour (Canmore ID 14386). Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Course (Canmore ID 3088350) occupies much of Chanonry Ness in the foreground of the view.
