Scope and Content This is a very general view of the northern side of Inverness on the Beauly Firth. On the Black Isle the communities of Redcastle, Charleston, North Kessock and Craigton can be clearly seen. The A9 runs from bottom left to top right, crossing the Kessock Bridge. On the east side of the A9 is the Tulloch Caledonian Stadium, opened in 1996, providing modern facilities for Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC which was formed by amalgamating Inverness Thistle FC and Inverness Caledonian FC in 1994. Also in this area is the Longman landfill site, closed in 2003, and the extensive saltmarsh. The Longman industrial estate sits between the A9 and the river and was the site of an airfield before WW2 but superseded by Inverness Airport at Dalcross in 1947. Between the river and the canal, built in 1803-1818, is South Kessock and Merkinch. At the top left is the historic village of Clachnaharry with the recent housing development at Scorguie and Muirtown. There are lots of archaeological and historic sites, few of which can be clearly seen in the photograph. But the Cameron Barracks, built in 1880-1886, can be seen at mid-left and behind is the newly built Millburn Academy. The Station was built in 1855. The Marina can be seen at the mouth of the River and the piers for the Kessock Ferry can be seen at South and North Kessock. The Kessock Ferry operated between South Kessock and North Kessock on the Black Isle from the C15 till the opening of the Bridge in 1982. The Merkinch Nature Reserve extends from the South Kessock pier to the Caledonian Canal. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
