Aerial view of Strathcathro Roman Camp, near Brechin, Angus, looking N.

SC 1970265

Description Aerial view of Strathcathro Roman Camp, near Brechin, Angus, looking N.

Date 6/1982

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1970265

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This image shows cropmarks of the SW corner of Stracathro Roman camp, revealing the distinctive clavicular form of the W gate. Also visible is the substantial ring ditch lying to the W, outside the entrance, and a group of several other possible ring ditch features within the interior of the fort in a curving arc associated with darker subsoil. Linear ditches in the NW corner of the camp may be the remains of rig cultivation. The putative pipeline trench as suggested for SC1970196 is curving towards the river and there are additional ring ditch and other features outside the fort as previously suggested for (Aberdeenshire Council's HER) NO65NW0043. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
