SC 1970259

Description Aerial view of White Caterthun Hillfort, near Brechin, Angus, looking E.

Date 2/1982

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1970259

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This is a slightly blurred view of White Caterthun Hillfort, with the Brown Caterthun fort behind to the L, under partial snow covering. It shows the snow highlighting some of the defences and also some hollows, perhaps representing parts of the roundhouse previously recorded. The White Caterthun is one of the most spectacular forts in Scotland, commanding a wide sweep of country from a low hill on the NW side of Strathmore opposite Brechin. It is an Iron Age fort consisting of a double stone wall, probably timber-laced, with earthen outer defences. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
