Aerial view of Ballownie cropmarks, near Stracathro, Brechin, Angus, looking SE.

SC 1970202

Description Aerial view of Ballownie cropmarks, near Stracathro, Brechin, Angus, looking SE.

Date 10/1978

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1970202

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content A group of irregular cropmark features and a crescentic structure, possibly a souterrain, have previously been located in this field. The latter is not obvious in this photo. To the right (S) of these is a linear feature running diagonally across this field which, from Canmore photos, extends into the adjoining field to the W. This is either a modern service trench or possibly the remains of an earlier possibly rectilinear enclosure. Probable broad rig cultivation is visible in the adjoining field to the E reflecting the line of the modern field boundaries. Note that the line of trees on the field boundary has now been removed. This image is slightly blurred. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
