Oblique aerial view across Strath Fleet, Sutherland, from Achastaile, looking S.

SC 1944849

Description Oblique aerial view across Strath Fleet, Sutherland, from Achastaile, looking S.

Date 28/1/1998

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1944849

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Prominent in the foreground of the image is an undated double-ditched circular earthwork, with a possible house footing within. Two hut circles (not distinguishable in this image) are situated between this site and the A839 road which crosses the photo from left to right. At top left corner, beyond road and railway, is part of the township of Rossal ("Rosshill" on the mid-18th-C Roy map), not to be confused with the better-known Rossal in Strathnaver. At top right edge, the red-roofed building is at Achvrail, where the steading includes a water-powered threshing mill. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
