Description Aerial view of Lochend, Loch Ness and the River Ness, looking N towards Inverness.

Date 21/8/1999

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1944435

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content A wide view of the River Ness as it leaves Loch Ness, heading N for Inverness. At lower centre is Bona Light house and associated buildings where the Caledonian canal enters Loch Ness. It is a two-storey octagonal lighthouse. At the west end of the building is a bay window from which the light originally shone. The buildings are in a poor state of repair. Beside them are the piers of the former Bona ferry which, before the building of the canal, was a busy crossing point. Above and to the left is Abban Water. At the end of the narrow isthmus is Castle Spirital, the scant remains of a defensive structure. The village of Lochend is in the left corner of the photo. Just seen at bottom R is Aldourie Castle, started in the C17, now a grand country house. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
