Description Oblique aerial view of Torboll Farm, Strath Fleet, East Sutherland, looking SE.
Date 2000
Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland
Catalogue Number SC 1906904
Category On-line Digital Images
Scope and Content Much of the image is occupied by the irregular open field, with areas of rig and furrow, referred to as "Thor's Field " and characterised in this image by an E-W trackway and a prominent, sinuous N-S ditch, probably part of a lade system, the two features intersecting in the middle of the image. The field contains no visible trace of the alleged broch "Thor's Tower" other than a green patch not seen here due to snow. The site is located to left of the central intersection, at a point where a lade is seen branching off towards a mill dam near Torboll Farm. Various enclosure- and boundary-type features are made visible by the snow cover and low light. The rectangular enclosure to right of centre (beyond pylon) may be associated with a farmstead recorded nearby. The distinctive pattern of raised stack bases at Torboll Farm (upper left sector of image) is notable. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
