Oblique aerial view of Torboll Farm, Strath Fleet, East Sutherland, looking S.

SC 1906903

Description Oblique aerial view of Torboll Farm, Strath Fleet, East Sutherland, looking S.

Date 2000

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1906903

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Much of the image is occupied by the irregular open field, with areas of rig and furrow, beyond the long straight field boundary. It has been referred to as "Thor's Field", but contains no visible trace of the alleged broch "Thor's Tower" other than a green patch not seen in this image. The site is located about halfway along the prominent, sinuous drain spanning the field from front to back as seen here. Various enclosure-type features are made visible by the snow cover and low light. The "Torboll Fall" Bronze Age field system (details not discernible at this distance) lies to its right, beside the forest plantation. The distinctive pattern of raised stack bases at Torboll Farm (centre left edge) is notable. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
