SC 1896325

Description Oblique aerial view of features at The Ord, near Lairg, looking SE.

Date 1998

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1896325

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content The area in the image is at the NE side of The Ord, an extensive Scheduled Monument comprising chambered cairns, cairns, settlements and field systems, including numerous hut circles. A heather-covered hut circle is seen in the foreground, while a less obvious one is among rig and furrow in the lower right quadrant of the image. At centre of right edge, a grey area contains a chambered cairn. Much of the centre of the image is occupied by a cairnfield, while to the left of the cairns, beyond the trackway, there is a burnt mound. Between the cairns and the telecoms mast access road is the location of the 16th-C Conflict of Gruids, in which Alexander, Master of Sutherland defeated John MacKay of Strathnaver. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
