Scope and Content View of Millburn Tower, Ratho, Edinburgh Millburn Tower was designed by architect William Atkinson, and built 1806-21. It is a mansion in the form of a two-storeyed, castellated keep with a long single-storey Tudor Gothic range to the south. The exterior was saved from dereliction in 1970. This shows the mansion, including the main entrance with stone statues of owls in flight above the front door. The windows have stone mullions, or vertical partitions between the glass. Battlements give the mansion the appearance of a castle. Millburn Tower was built for Robert Liston, British Ambassador to several countries, including the USA. He retired to Millburn Tower in 1821 and resided there until 1836. An American garden was designed for the grounds by Captain George Parkyns in 1804. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
