Scope and Content Fort at Elginhaugh, Midlothian This Roman fort is at Elginhaugh, near Dalkeith. It was first discovered by aerial photography in 1979. It is built on raised ground overlooking the river North Esk. The fort is also built on the Roman road known as Dere Street, which led N from York. This is an aerial view of the site. The layout of the fort can still be seen in cropmarks in the upper part of the image, just above the line of trees. The marks beyond the fort belong to its annexe. The site has been excavated and several datable coins were found. The fort was built during the governorship of Julius Agricola and was probably abandoned shortly his victory at Mons Graupius. The fort was deliberately demolished, but parts were reused. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
