Scope and Content Canna and Sanday, Small Isles, Inner Hebrides, Highland Canna and Sanday are the westernmost of the Small Isles in the Inner Hebrides and form part of the Small Isles National Scenic Area. They lie to the north-west of Rum, between Skye and the Outer Hebrides, and were gifted to the National Trust for Scotland in 1981 by the late Dr J L Campbell. This aerial view, taken from the east, shows Sanday (centre left) and Canna (right). Canna harbour lies between the two (centre). The rich and fertile soils of Canna and Sanday, in combination with the sheltered harbour, have supported human settlement from the Neolithic period (c.4000-2000BC). A survey of the islands was undertaken by the Royal Commission in 1994 to record all the archaeological sites and monuments together with the landscape in which they lie. In all, over a thousand structures were recovered during the survey. This survey is published as Royal Commission on Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland Broadsheet 5.
