Scope and Content Cromarty, Black Isle, Highland Situated on the Black Isle at the mouth of the Cromarty Firth, Cromarty was a major fishing port and trading centre from the 12th century and a Royal Burgh until 1685. The present town is largely the creation of George Ross, who purchased the Cromarty Estate and town in 1772. Cromarty is the birthplace of Hugh Miller (1802-1856) well-known geologist, writer, stonemason and newspaper editor. This view is from the west and shows the town (centre) with the late 18th-century harbour and 19th-century lighthouse (centre left). The large three sided complex in the centre is a former sailcloth and hemp rope making works that was founded in 1774 by George Ross. The strip of land in the background is North Sutor. The ferry quay at Nigg can be seen (left corner). In 1179, William the Lion built a castle at Dunscaith on North Sutor to guard the north shore of the narrow entrance to the Cromarty Firth. This was served by the ferry between Cromarty and Nigg. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
