Scope and Content Aerial view of Anstruther Wester, Fife Anstruther Wester began as part of a fishing town, becoming a Burgh of Barony in 1541, and a Royal Burgh in the 1580s. A 'mean town' in 1616, it suffered economic damage from the Act of Union in 1707 but recovered in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The harbour (near right) was built in 1867. Along with the railway connection (opened, 1863), it contributed to the burgh's 19th-century recovery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
